Meningococcal Vaccination: CDC Recommendations

By law, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette is required to inform you about meningitis and to advise of the need for mandatory vaccination against the disease for all students admitted to UL Lafayette. The latest research is showing that the effectiveness of the vaccine may decrease with time, leading to the newest recommendations for a booster dose. The following are current CDC recommendations regarding Meningococcal vaccination:

  • Adolescents get the 1st dose of the meningococcal vaccine at age 11 or 12 with a booster dose at age 16.
  • Students entering college who have not received the meningococcal vaccine must get at least one dose.
  • Students entering college who received their first dose of the meningococcal vaccine before their 16th birthday should get a booster dose.
  • This booster dose it not mandatory at this time; however, if you have received only 1 dose of the meningococcal vaccine prior to your 16th birthday, please consider getting this critically important booster dose for your protection.
